Price Computing Scales
Price computing scales are electronic weighing devices specifically designed for retail environments where products are sold by weight. The primary function of Price computing scales, is to quickly and accurately calculate the total price of an item based on its weight and a pre-programmed unit price.
Price computing scales are a common sight in grocery stores, supermarkets, delis, butcher shops, produce markets, and other businesses that sell items like fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and bulk goods.
They use digital technology to measure weight and perform calculations, and are designed for quick and easy operation by both staff and customers.
"Trade Approved" or "Legal for Trade": Scales used for commercial transactions where the price is determined by weight must be certified as accurate and comply with legal metrology standards. This ensures fair trade practices.
How does a price conputing scale work?
- Weigh the item(s): When an item is placed on the scale's platform, the scale measures the weight of the item(s). This weight is typically displayed on a digital screen.
- Unit Price Input: The retailer (or a pre-programmed setting) manually enters the unit price for the specific item. This could be per kilogram, per 100 grams, depending on the product.
- Price Calculation: The scale's internal software then instantly multiplies the weight of the item by the unit price to calculate the total price.
- Display: The calculated total price, along with the weight and unit price, is simultaneously displayed on screens. Many price computing scales have dual displays – one facing the operator and one facing the customer – to ensure transparency and build customer trust.
- Tare Function: Most price computing scales include a "tare" function. This allows the operator to subtract the weight of any container, bag, or packaging material before weighing the product itself. This funtion ensures that the customer only pays for the actual product, not the packaging.
- Memory (PLUs - Product Look-Ups): To speed up transactions, many scales can be programmed to store a significant number of "Product Look-Ups" (PLUs). These are pre-programmed entries for frequently sold items that include their unit price. This means the operator doesn't have to manually input the unit price every time.
