Counting Scales

Counting scales are essentially highly specialized weighing scales that do two main things: Accurately Weigh and Count by Weight

How do counting scales work?

  • Establishing a "Sample Weight" or "Average Piece Weight (APW)": By Placing a small, known quantity (a sample) of the identical items on the scale (e.g., 10, 20, or 100 pieces), the scale will weigh this sample and then divided the total weight by the number of pieces in the sample, in order to calculate the average weight of a single item. Some advanced scales allow you to manually input a known average piece weight if you already have it.

  • Calculating the Total Count: Once the average piece weight is established, you can place a much larger quantity of the same items on the scale, the scale then measures the total weight of this larger batch. By using a simple formula (Total Weight / Average Piece Weight = Number of Items), the scale instantly displays the total count of items.
